Am I My Brother’s Keeper?

Last year I celebrating the 20th Anniversary of my initiation into the Tau Tetarton Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. Together with my six other Pledge Brothers, we returned to Martin, TN and tried to act like 21-year-olds in 40-year-old bodies. We had fun. It was important for us to have fun. We used it as a learning experience for our young Brothers and Pledges. We wanted to teach them that Brotherhood doesn’t end when upon graduation. Am I My Brother’s Keeper? If you ask anyone in our Chapter, the answer will be yes. We are Brothers. That’s what we do. As Christians, we are all Brothers. We are even Brothers with non-Christians. In fact, those are the ones who need Brotherhood the most. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2 (NIV) Sometimes this premise is hijacked politically. Tax benefits for wealthy Americans is often equated with not caring about the unfortunate. Sure I would love to be more wealthy and be able to help more. However, you don’t need to be wealthy to help a Brother with his burdens. I have more time than money at this point in my life. I have to rely on little opportunities to help others. Maybe it’s advice when someone has a problem. Maybe it’s helping find someone a job. Jesus taught us to teach a man to fish rather than simply giving him fish. Isn’t that being your Brother’s keeper too?
